Vision

History & Overview

grad on production job

Since 1992 Streetlights has been redressing the inequity of gender and racial hiring practices behind-the-camera across all media platforms. Through Job Training, Job Placement and Career Advancement, Streetlights has made inroads in every department, from Production Assistant to Producer, from Stylist to Showrunner.

Streetlights provides vocational training, life skills and career guidance, creating pathways into life-sustaining professions for those with the least opportunity and the greatest need.

Participants are equipped with skills enabling them to improve their quality of life.  For more than 30 years our goals have been remained the same:

  • increase access into well-paying careers to those who have been denied employment because of limited work history or gaps in employment

  • teach participants to compete and excel at jobs in today’s workplace

  • eliminate dependence on public assistance

  • provide the Entertainment Industry with a skilled and motivated talent pool

We believe job training is the building block for a better life. When they join Streetlights, 95% of participants are barely earning a living wage or are living in poverty. Many have significant barriers to employment from having termed out of foster care to being formerly incarcerated.

Graduates can buy health insurance, purchase homes, and provide for their children. The professional education and practical experience provided by Streetlights allow participants to achieve long-term economic growth and social parity for themselves and their families.

Streetlights is a Job Training, Job Placement and Career Advancement nonprofit founded in the wake of the 1992 L.A. riots. Streetlights’ goal is to create careers, not just jobs, for underrepresented young adults from diverse backgrounds. This groundbreaking organization was on the forefront of bringing a skilled, ethnically diverse workforce to the behind-the-camera world of film, TV, commercials, and all media platforms.

Streetlights is the only FREE production training of its kind requiring participants to complete 4½-weeks of job training, including PAID on-the-job training on actual productions followed by GUARANTEED job placement onto professional sets in all forms of entertainment media. Taught by industry professionals, the aspiring production assistants (PAs) learn the varied skills necessary to be of true assistance to the production companies from their very first day on the job. Mentoring, job counseling and financial assistance for those in need are also a vital and on-going part of the services provided to all Streetlights participants.
